Denmark's finest flat-water fjord — shallow, consistent, and surprisingly windy
Ringkøbing Fjord is a large, shallow lagoon on Denmark's west coast, sheltered from the North Sea by a narrow spit of dunes. The result is flat to slightly choppy water that is almost always windier than it looks from the car park. There is a dedicated beginner area in the shallows, a windsurf school, and the town itself is genuinely charming — popular with Danish summer holidaymakers and well set up for families. The season runs June to August, so plan accordingly. Three hours from Kiel by ferry, which makes it a realistic weekend trip from northern Germany.

Ringkøbing Fjord delivers one of the most reliable flat-water set-ups in northern Europe. The lagoon is large, shallow, and — crucially — consistently windier than it looks from the outside. There is a dedicated shallow area where beginners can put a foot down and find their feet, as well as plenty of open water for those wanting to push their speed. The windsurf school is well equipped, and the town behind the dunes has everything you need for a comfortable week.
