Viana do Castelo sits on the northern edge of Portugals Atlantic coast, where the swell has had the entire ocean to build. The main beach offers a solid mix of conditions — choppy freeride on calmer days, genuine wave sailing when the Atlantic delivers. Theres a hotel and windsurf centre right on the beach, which makes it surprisingly accessible for what is a relatively raw, wild spot. Family-friendly infrastructure, serious wave potential, and none of the crowds you get further south — this one is worth the drive.

The main beach at Viana do Castelo is a wide, exposed stretch of Atlantic coast with a proper windsurf centre attached to the hotel right there on the sand. The north wind funnels down from Galicia and turns into solid side-onshore conditions — choppy freeride on the lighter days, and genuine overhead waves when the swell picks up. This is not a mellow spot, but the infrastructure makes it far more manageable than many wave venues of this calibre.
