Marotti Windsurf Centar is the home base of Enrico Marotti, two-time IFCA slalom world champion, at the north end of Volosko harbour. You rig next to the centre and step onto your board from a launch mat on the quay, straight into deep water. Mind the moored boats and buoys right off the launch. The wind is the tramontana, a northerly that blows over the bay early in the morning. In spring it starts at about 5:30, a bit later in August and in autumn, and it slowly drops during the session, so everyone comes off the water together and the coffee goes on and on. The local station counts more than 200 windy days a year, and the centre gives 13 to 25 knots as the average range. The water is flat but really gusty and shifty, and 15 knots in the gusts counts as a light day, which is why most locals ride foil here. Enrico says it himself: this is not an easy spot, and learning to plane takes longer here, but if you learn in these gusts every other spot feels easier. The centre runs windsurf courses from a first try to advanced, Enrico's own clinics, rental and wingfoil lessons, plus e-foil, SUP and kayaks for the calm afternoons. Volosko is a small fishing town full of cafes and seafood restaurants, and Preluk is right across the bay.

A small beach on the east side of Preluk bay, across from Volosko, with the car park right next to it and the tramontana every morning.
Preluk is the bay between Volosko and Rijeka, and this spot is the small beach on its east side. The car park is right next to the beach, Beach bar Preluk is a short walk along the shore, and there is a restaurant by the moorings just to the north. The wind is the tramontana, a northerly thermal wind that blows in Preluk every morning. When we sailed over from Volosko, we rode right up to the head of the bay below Hotel Navis. For lessons or rental, Enrico Marotti's windsurf centre is about 1 km across the bay at the north end of Volosko harbour.

About Volosko
What holds for every spot here.
Volosko is the old fishing harbour at the northern end of the Opatija riviera, tucked into the Kvarner Bay with the Učka ridge rising behind it. You launch straight off the beach at the center into deep water within a few metres, and you ride with the green coast on one side and the islands of Cres and Krk on the horizon. The wind is the tramontana. On clear nights cool air gathers in the hills behind the village and pours down to the sea in the morning, 13 to 25 knots on a good day and strongest in spring and autumn. By the afternoon it has gone, which is why the coaching happens in the morning and the rest of the day is yours. Blowing off the land, it leaves the bay flat. Flat water and a clean launch is the combination that makes this a rare place to learn to foil. A first flight is far less daunting when a fall means flat water and a short swim, and when there is nothing to fight on the way back out.

Each bar: how often it blew between 9:00 and 18:00 in that month, counted over about 3.5 years of weather records for this destination. Not a wind meter on the beach: where hills or a gap speed the wind up (Canaries, Tarifa), it often blows more than this shows.
