Stay in control when you're overpowered — without changing your gear.

Overpowered and don't want to change down? Here's how to take back control in strong wind — the trim tweaks, the body position, and the things most people get wrong.

We'll assume you're already rigged on the beach and can't — or don't want to — change your gear. Here's how to take back control when you're overpowered: it comes down to trim, technique, fitness and mindset.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Trim your gear

Start with the trim. Increase the outhaul tension to flatten the sail and reduce its pull — but don't overdo it, because too flat makes the sail unstable. Lengthen your harness lines, ideally 2 to 4 inches longer than your regular setup (adjustable lines make this easy). And lower the boom to around chest height.

    Fix your technique

On the water, push your hip outboard and keep your upper body in, close to the rig — in strong winds, hip out, upper body in is the way. Leverage your weight correctly by pulling your harness lines down, not just sideways. And anticipate: learn to read the water, looking upwind and in front of you so gusts and waves don't catch you out.

    Get fit

Windsurfing demands full-body fitness. Build endurance and core stability so you can hang on and stay relaxed when it's really blowing.

    Mind your mindset

Stay humble. Progress gradually and respect the wind.

    Mind your mindset

Common mistakes

  • Over-flattening the sail — too much outhaul makes it unstable.
  • Sailing arms-out instead of getting your hip out and upper body in.
  • Pulling the harness lines sideways instead of down, so your weight never loads the rig.
  • Not reading the water — getting surprised by gusts and waves instead of looking upwind and ahead.
Coach's note

In strong winds, hip out, upper body in is the way.
