Model data from Open-Meteo, Jan 2023 to Jul 2026 (about 3.5 years), daytime 9:00 to 18:00. Session days: days with at least 2 hours in a row of 11+ knots (or 16+ knot gusts) between 11:00 and 19:00. Not a wind meter on the beach.
Hatteras Island is a thin strip of sand between the Atlantic and Pamlico Sound, with the ocean on one side and the largest lagoon on the US east coast on the other. The sound is the draw: waist-deep, flat, and miles wide, so you can push a move you'd never risk out of your depth and walk back to your board when it goes wrong. The Atlantic side is right there for wave days. Autumn is the season locals wait for: the crowds thin, the water is still warm, and the fronts start lining up. Accommodation sits right at the water and gear rental is on site, so you can fly in with hand luggage.

Each bar: how often it blew between 9:00 and 18:00 in that month, counted over about 3.5 years of weather records for this area. Not a wind meter on the beach: where hills or a gap speed the wind up (Canaries, Tarifa), it often blows more than this shows.

It's the forecast model. In any wind app (Windguru, Windy…) you can pick which one to show. Not sure? GFS is the safe global default; the high-res ones (ICON-D2, AROME…) are sharper at coastal & thermal spots.

Avon is on Hatteras Island, a thin strip of sand between the Atlantic and Pamlico Sound. On the soundside the lagoon is massive and waist deep all the way out, so you can stand everywhere and never have to swim. That makes it easy and safe for beginners, and because you feel safe it is an easy place to get better. In the right season the wind statistics are very good and you get a lot of water time. For advanced riders the sound is really good too, but the conditions stay much the same: very small chop and pretty much flat water, so it can get a bit boring over time. The big risk is how shallow it is, so mind your fin. Big houses sit right in front of the water, with hooks inside to hang your sails, and you rig on the grass. There is one decently equipped rental in the shop, and a windsurf event with a friendly crowd takes place here every year. It is a bit far from everything, and there is not much else going on.
