Each bar: how often it blew between 9:00 and 18:00 in that month, counted over about 3.5 years of weather records for Westerland (World Cup beach). Not a wind meter on the beach: where hills or a gap speed the wind up (Canaries, Tarifa), it often blows more than this shows.

It's the forecast model. In any wind app (Windguru, Windy…) you can pick which one to show. Not sure? GFS is the safe global default; the high-res ones (ICON-D2, AROME…) are sharper at coastal & thermal spots.

Westerland's World Cup beach: a powerful North Sea shore break, gusty offshore days and only a small window when it all works.
This is the beach in front of Westerland where the windsurf World Cup is held in September and October. The North Sea waves roll in and suddenly hit the island, which makes a powerful, steep shore break. With onshore wind it is really hard to get out: spot the last wave of a set, carry your gear as high as you can so the wave passes under it, and get through the impact zone fast. Coming back in can be even harder than going out. The window for good conditions is small. Onshore wind brings the shore break, and an east wind blows straight offshore. The town behind the beach blocks it, so it gets gusty with little wind right in front of the beach, which makes it hard to get back in. On those days the water can look completely flat from the beach, which is unusual for Sylt, but it can be less flat out on the water than it looks. Mind the rock groynes along the beach, and at high tide the shore break can be punchier. Outside competitions access is a hassle: you park behind the dune and carry everything over, and on a normal windsurf day you would probably rather go to the north of the island. The storms pass through in September and October and even in winter, when it can get cold; July and August can be a lot warmer. On some days there is a lot of seaweed in the water, which slows foils down.
