Each bar: how often it blew between 9:00 and 18:00 in that month, counted over about 3.5 years of weather records for this area. Not a wind meter on the beach: where hills or a gap speed the wind up (Canaries, Tarifa), it often blows more than this shows.

It's the forecast model. In any wind app (Windguru, Windy…) you can pick which one to show. Not sure? GFS is the safe global default; the high-res ones (ICON-D2, AROME…) are sharper at coastal & thermal spots.

A quiet bay on the Langebaan lagoon with flat, waist-deep water far out and a huge sandbank to blast along.
Kraalbaai is a bay on the Langebaan lagoon, inside the West Coast National Park. The water stays shallow for a long way out, about waist deep, and it is flat. Off the beach there is a huge sandbank, and you can blast along the beach. Nico calls it one of the nicest spots he has been to, if not the nicest. It is completely untouched and you are by yourself out there. On his day it was windy and the wind was pretty steady. Wooden stairs lead from the car park down to the beach, so all your gear goes up and down them. At the end of the day the crew did a downwinder straight across the bay to where they had started: about 50 minutes by car around the lagoon, and by Nico's estimate about 15 minutes on the water.
