Drive onto the beach and rig on the sand: flat tideways at low tide, waves over the sandbanks at high tide.
The main windsurf beach of Sankt Peter-Ording. You drive over the dyke and park right on the sand (paid, open from mid March, daytime only), with a surf school, hire, toilets and food at the beach. Depending on the tide it can be up to 500 m to the water. Best wind is south-west to north-west, blowing slightly onshore. At low tide the tideways run flat and shallow, good for learning. At high tide waves build in front of the sandbanks, and with a steady westerly the outer banks can hold waves up to 3 m, for experienced riders only. Watch out: the tide current runs north on the rising tide and south on the falling tide. When wind and current go the same way you drift, so check the tide table and don't go out alone. Keep to the marked zones and out of the swimming areas. East wind is offshore. On spring tides with high water in the early afternoon the beach car park can flood. From our own session: a westerly storm here is full power onshore, with shore break and short, messy waves, and the gusts were hard to hold. When the beach floods, the drive-on access closes and you carry your gear about half a kilometre through the flooded beach. Stay upwind of the wooden posts in the water.
